Brendan’s Band is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing addiction awareness to the Boyertown, Berks County community and surrounding communities.
Tragically, we lost Brendan Traylor, age 18, to a prescription drug overdose. Brendan was a loving son, grandson, brother, cousin, nephew and friend. He was a friendly, outgoing person who always had a lot of friends. Brendan was a wrestler since the 4th grade and played Jr High football. He graduated high school in 2013. Brendan was part of different bands that he and his friends formed. He was a gifted drummer and guitar player. Brendan is part of a huge family who love and miss him more than words could ever convey.
Brendan dabbled in over the counter medicines and prescription drugs. He then turned to heroin, first snorting it, then shooting it. His family held an intervention on February 6, 2014 and Brendan left for rehab in Florida. He returned home on March 25th and less than a month later on April 7th, he was gone.
Since our formation in August 2014, Brendan’s Band with the help from recovering addicts, Pastor Dan Burris and St John’s Church was able to have a local 12 step program in place, held weekly. With the help of our police force, there’s been additional medication drop off boxes installed at our local police stations for the public to dispose of any unused prescription medicines. With the help of The Addiction Prevention Strategy Team, there is a scholarship fund set up in Brendan’s name to help defer costs for families seeking help.
Our ongoing goals include but not limited to:
· Creating an educational video to be used in schools and social media.
· Every household to have a lock box in it to lock up all medications.
· Bringing programs to our schools to educate students and parents about the devastating effects of addiction.
· Organizing an annual awareness walk.
We will continue to strive to provide information, updated laws, our friendship and comfort to anyone who reaches out to Brendan’s Band for help. We are not professionals or counselors, but we can listen and send you in the right direction to seek help for you or your loved one.
As a group, if we can help save just 1 person, then we’ve done our job and Brendan his.
